Install the Elasticsearch version required by the application and follow that release’s official packaging/container instructions. Major versions can change JDK bundling, security defaults, APIs, and configuration names.

For development, a single-node setup can be convenient. For production, configure persistent storage, authentication/TLS as required, discovery/cluster settings, memory/container limits, backups/snapshots, and monitoring.

Do not expose a development cluster directly to the public network.
