Redis Client Connections

How Redis accepts and serves many TCP clients, connection limits, buffers, timeouts, backpressure, and why client-pool sizing matters.

1. Connection Lifecycle

Redis listens on server sockets, accepts client connections, and registers them with its event-driven I/O subsystem.

Each client consumes server-side metadata and input/output buffering in addition to the TCP socket itself.

2. Connection Limits

Practical limits depend on both Redis configuration and the operating system:

  • Redis maxclients;
  • process file-descriptor limits;
  • kernel socket/backlog resources;
  • memory consumed by client buffers.

3. Output Backpressure

A slow consumer can accumulate a large output buffer. This is particularly important for Pub/Sub, replicas, or clients requesting large replies.

Configure and monitor client output-buffer limits so one client cannot consume unbounded memory.

4. Client Pools

Applications should use bounded connection pools and sensible connect/read/write timeouts.

Too few connections can serialize client work; too many can waste memory/file descriptors and create reconnect storms.

5. Failure Handling

Clients must handle:

  • connection reset/timeouts;
  • failover/topology changes;
  • MOVED/ASK in Cluster;
  • retry safety and idempotency.

A Redis command timeout is not proof the command did not execute; retry semantics depend on the operation.
